I love an artist who suffers for their work!

Having been an Art Director for several years and working with many photographers, I know what you have gone thru to get this shot... absolutely stunning!

Your photos have excellent composition, lighting and drama - such a breath of fresh air from many of the photos that get get posted (and that is not a cut to any who have posted their photos, but Marcia here is a stand out talent!)

I'm not a lover of studio photos, I mean, I dont like very much of photos where everything was arranged and prepared to the limit, I like more of the ones you capture on the moment, made by random happenings. But this one is really good! I would love to see photos takem by you outside the studio, without being previously arranged!

Thanks, all. Your comments are very much appreciated. :)

Kibagami: I'd like to see that, too, but my studio is too small to work with actual human-sized people. Most of my portraiture is on-location.

Anubis: Thank you. Actually, most of my work is done outside the studio and I'll post some of it as time goes by. Problem is, it gets very cold and gray here in winter, so sometimes it's either the studio or nothing. That's why I took up 3D. :)

First time i give full 10 points for this imho "perfect" shot.

It needs a lot of skill to get such dynamic in a "balanced" still-life - and is damn good looking as it is.

The hangig drops of water, the stalk is turning upwards ... perfect. :)

Avatar GenoCid

 01/17/04 @139

i think this kind of photos requires more skill, like u need to know about lighting and composition.
as kibagami said i would really like to see more studio photos!maybe some models or nice compositions like that!

This is realy great.. the cherries are just perfect giving a sense of movement.. i would never remenber to make something like this.. for that i give you 10 points..

if you want to come to portugal the weather in winter here is much warmer, this way you want need to do so much studio photos.. :)
and in the midle you can give me some points on taking photos.lol . i mostly taken them without any technicality... lol

i am realy a point and shot.. :b
Sometimes i think about the photo... but never at this scale..

i realy enjoyed your photo.. ;)

my critique would be to get a mose expensive fork, or maybe just a better make with smooth sides, this one looks somewhat on the medeocre side. compare a woman with beautiful shapes (legs, breasts, etc) but her skin looked like it had leprosy, a gritty texture. composition and time put in, a+

I never knew you could have such beautiful, delicious and tempting artwork with 3 cherries, I am simply amazed. +7. Colors are gorgeous

Avatar Foot

 01/19/04 @268

One of the best photographs I have seen here. Rich color, full tonal range, composition arranged very thoughtfully. I hate to be another praise in the chorus, but I don't disagree with the praise in the tinyest way for once.

Wonderful photograph. You have captured the very essense of Maraschino cherries with this image. Your suffering was not in vain, I can taste them from here. It's a very well balanced photo too, The striking contrast between cherries, fork and background are great. Kudos.

Avatar mutantmonkey

 01/19/04 @654

awesome job, perfect thats all i can say u took the picture in the exact moment that drop of cherry juice thats falling of the fork makes this seem unbelievable, its amazing how something so simple can make such a different.
great!!!now i have to run to the supermarket to get me some cherries!!!!!!

wow, when I saw this I thought "wonderful photograph", but I never thought I would make it member gallery n°1!!!! I'm really surprised about it, thats great! because its something new - a photograph n°1! - and its a wonderful composition!

marcia

 01/19/04 @727

Thank you so much, everyone. I can't tell you how much your kind and thoughtful comments mean to me. :)

Ninosboombox: I don't think I would compare the slight texture on the fork to leprosy, but I see your point. The problem was, I had to find a fork with a gracefully curving profile in order to make the composition work the way I envisioned it. I was hoping to find some sterling in open stock, but after searching the city for several weeks, I was only able to find two forks that met the profile criteria, and this was the better of the two. Maybe if I had searched longer... but my patience has its limitations. ;)

Danka: I ended up with a huge bowl of leftover cherries, and my children ate themselves sick. <g>

Mutatantmonkey: I shot about 108 exposures (on film) to get that image. It was very difficult to catch the drips at the right point, just before they fell, plus the cherries kept drying out and had to have fresh juice poured over them every few minutes!

I wish I could respond to every one of you individually. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your opinions with me. :)

Ah, If you were going for the "yummy" effect, well you got it. They look very appetizing I can almost taste them. Great job!:)

Avatar Axterxes

 01/19/04 @973

I think it's the fork blending shadows in the background.

The cherries being a totall reflectant onto the stalk.
The lustrous brown...
the spicy red tints, and then the bursts of reflected light.

reflections, smooth corners, roundedness, though, The thought and the composition is genereally what you would need to make a perfect image.

The fork goes out ONE end, and the cherry stalk goes outwards in the opposite direction.
The ALMOST centralized image of the cherries give it an "perfect" and yet "imperfect" photograph...and all the pieces are almost symmetrical.

nice drops too...just the right amber/red..

ninosboombox

 01/20/04 @029

the example is indeed the far end of the spectrum (sometimes people cannot see it unless it is mispropotioned) , but i find that comparing that way rids any slack for any inperfections. that work for me anyways. but like i said it is something to admire the time you put in, very rare animal indeed!!

Egad man… I’ve been told that I have patience but that takes dedication :)
Absolutely amazing, the color and shape of the cherries is amazing, and the drips starting to form give it a sense of time, +5 (it’s all I have to give)

Hi Nina & Boy,

Tell your sister thank you very much for the compliment. I'm glad she likes the photo. I had a giant bowl of cherries leftover from this shoot; my children ate until they were sick! If you were here, Nina, they'd have been happy to share with you. :)

Gorgeous, I love the lighting (everything gleams) - but, the effort you put into this! What did you do with the other Maraschino cherries?

BooHunter

 02/01/04 @217

How amazing! It makes me really hungry for cherries! ;) But seriously, it is so beautiful...like you could just reach right in and pluck the whole thing right out. The colors are sharp, and the contrast against the background is amazing! I'm not sure how you came up with this idea in the first place, but I love it!

This is probably one of the most perfect photographs I've ever seen. It's so strong and vibrant, it's tactile. You can taste the cherries. The little stem just finishes it off with an almost frivilious "yes, we are perfect, tasteful cherries. we know it and so do you." AWESOME. This would sell ALOT of cherries.
